The penny test
Insert a penny into a tread groove with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, your tread is worn to about 2/32", the legal minimum in most states, and it's time for new tires. If part of the head is covered, you've got some tread life left, but it's worth checking multiple spots across the tire since wear isn't always even.
