This isn't generic advice. Spearfish sits at the base of terrain that genuinely works your brakes harder than flat highway driving does.
Spearfish Canyon and Highway 14A have long, sustained descents. Riding the brakes continuously on a grade like that builds heat faster than your brakes can shed it, and that heat is what causes brake fade — a soft, less responsive pedal right when you need stopping power most. Downshifting and using engine braking on the way down, rather than riding the pedal the whole descent, is the difference between brakes that stay responsive and brakes that fade.
The I-90 grades put similar sustained load on brakes, especially if you're loaded down or towing.
Towing to Deadwood or Lead on hilly, winding roads adds trailer weight to a system already working against grade, which is exactly the kind of driving that wears pads and heats rotors faster than flat commuting.
Road salt and brine used on Spearfish winter roads gets into calipers and slide pins. Corrosion can seize a caliper slide or slowly weld a parking brake mechanism, which shows up as uneven pad wear, a pull to one side, or a brake that drags even when you're off the pedal. This is a Black Hills-specific issue that shops in drier, warmer climates rarely see.
If you're regularly driving the Canyon, towing to Deadwood or Lead, or running winters here year after year, your brake system needs a closer look on a shorter cycle than a purely flat-highway commuter's would.

Every brake job gets checked before you leave the lot.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, even in a sealed system, and moisture lowers the fluid's boiling point. On a long Canyon descent or a hot summer tow, brake fluid gets hot, and old, moisture-contaminated fluid can boil at a lower temperature than fresh fluid, which causes a soft or fading pedal right when braking hard matters most. Altitude and sustained downhill braking make this more relevant here than in flat, low-elevation driving. A periodic fluid flush is inexpensive compared to what a brake failure on a grade could cost you.
An ABS warning light usually means the system has detected a fault — a bad wheel speed sensor, a wiring issue, or a module fault — and has disabled anti-lock function until it's fixed. Your regular brakes will typically still work, but you'll lose the anti-lock benefit, which matters most exactly when you need it: hard braking on ice or gravel. We can read the fault code and diagnose what's actually wrong before recommending a fix.
