Why it matters in the Black Hills
This is the most common winter no-start call we get in the northern Black Hills, and it's almost always avoidable. A battery loses a big share of its cranking amps as temperature drops — a battery that starts your truck without hesitation in October can fail to turn the engine over at all once temperatures hit -10°F to -20°F, which we see regularly in Spearfish, Lead, and up Spearfish Canyon in January and February. The battery isn't dying that morning. It's been marginal for weeks, and cold weather is what finally exposes it. Add road salt and brine on US-85 and I-90, which speeds up terminal corrosion, and a battery that "seemed fine" in fall is a common reason for a truck that won't start on the coldest morning of the year. Trucks, 4x4 & diesel note
Diesel trucks and larger 4x4s often run dual batteries and higher-output alternators, and cold starts pull much harder on a diesel's glow plug system and battery bank than on a gas engine. We test both batteries individually on dual-battery setups — a truck can crank on one good battery while the other is dead, which masks the problem until the good one fails too. Newer vehicles with start-stop technology require an AGM battery, not a standard flooded battery; we match the replacement to what your vehicle's charging system actually requires. A battery issue can also trigger a check engine light, and a weak charging system is behind more heater blowing cold complaints than people expect.
